The Solution
3.1 Energy Tokens (ET)
The core primitive of SunGrid is the Energy Token (ET) — a digital token representing 1 kilowatt-hour of verified renewable energy.
3.1.1 Minting
When a verified renewable energy source generates 1 kWh, the SunGrid Smart Meter (SGM-1) at that site cryptographically signs a generation attestation. This attestation is submitted to the SunGrid oracle network, which verifies the data against independent sources (weather data, grid telemetry). Upon verification, 1 ET is minted on the SunGrid L2 and credited to the generator's wallet.
3.1.2 Trading
ET tokens trade on open markets against any supported currency or token. Price is determined by real-time supply and demand, grid congestion, time of day, and carbon intensity. Trading occurs peer-to-peer with no intermediary.
3.1.3 Consumption
When a consumer uses 1 kWh of energy, their smart meter submits a consumption attestation. Upon verification, 1 ET is burned and the consumer's energy account is credited. The consumer pays the market price of the ET at the time of consumption.
3.1.4 Storage
Excess ET can be stored in virtual batteries — tokenized claims on physical storage capacity (pumped hydro, lithium-ion, flow batteries, thermal storage). Storage rights are tradeable separately, allowing energy to be "time-shifted" from generation to consumption.
3.2 The Energy-Money Convergence
SunGrid does not replace fiat currency. It creates a parallel settlement layer where energy itself is the unit of account. This enables:
- Energy-backed value transfer: Send energy value across borders instantly, without correspondent banking.
- Energy-denominated contracts: Power purchase agreements, storage leases, and grid services priced in kWh rather than dollars.
- Energy as collateral: ET tokens can be used as collateral in DeFi protocols, backed by real physical energy.
3.3 Key Design Principles
- Energy is the product, not the token. ET represents a claim on physical energy. Its value is tied to energy markets, not token speculation.
- Hardware is the root of trust. Verification happens at the physical layer (smart meters), not through self-reported data.
- Complement, don't replace. SunGrid augments existing grids and utilities. Energy still flows through physical wires.
- Start unregulated, expand regulated. Begin with behind-the-meter generation (unregulated), build precedent, then approach utilities.
3.4 What SunGrid Is Not
- Not a cryptocurrency exchange. SunGrid is a settlement protocol for energy, not a trading platform for speculative assets.
- Not a mining operation. No proof-of-work. No energy wasted on consensus. Validators stake SGC, not compute.
- Not a utility replacement. Utilities remain the physical operators of grids. SunGrid provides the financial layer.
- Not a yield product. Returns come from real energy arbitrage and grid services, not token inflation.
