SunGrid
Whitepaper/Executive Summary

Executive Summary

SunGrid is a decentralized settlement protocol that tokenizes verified renewable energy, enabling peer-to-peer energy trading across any grid in the world. By issuing one Energy Token (ET) per kilowatt-hour of verified renewable generation, SunGrid makes energy fungible across space and time — solving the single largest inefficiency in the global energy transition: curtailment and mispricing of renewable generation.

The Opportunity

The global energy market is valued at approximately $6 trillion annually. Yet an estimated 5–15% of renewable energy generated worldwide is curtailed — thrown away because local grids cannot absorb it. Meanwhile, consumers in high-price regions pay premium rates for fossil-fuel peaker power while clean energy sits unused kilometers away.

SunGrid does not generate energy. SunGrid does not replace grids. SunGrid adds a financial and settlement layer on top of existing physical infrastructure, allowing energy to flow to where it is valued most, priced in real time by an open market.

The Product

  • Energy Token (ET) — An ERC-20-compatible token representing 1 kWh of verified renewable energy. Minted by tamper-resistant smart meters at the point of generation. Burned upon consumption.
  • SunGrid Credits (SGC) — A fixed-supply utility token (1 billion) used for validator staking, fee discounts, and governance. Not a security. Not a yield instrument.
  • SunGrid Smart Meter (SGM-1) — A $45 IoT device that cryptographically verifies energy generation and consumption, serving as the hardware root of trust for the protocol.

The Market

SunGrid targets three segments in sequence:

  1. Residential solar owners (Year 1) — Behind-the-meter generation, unregulated in most jurisdictions. 10,000 meters installed.
  2. Municipal utilities (Year 2) — White-label platform for 5–10 utilities serving 100K–500K customers each.
  3. Investor-owned utilities and energy traders (Year 3+) — Enterprise API for grid-scale integration and cross-border trading.

The Business Model

Revenue is generated from real economic activity, not token inflation:

StreamMechanism
Transaction fees0.1% on every ET trade
Grid balancing servicesSaaS contracts with utilities for distributed energy resource management
REC certificationPer-certificate fee for on-chain renewable energy credit verification
Storage arbitrageProprietary trading across time zones and storage assets
Data & analyticsReal-time energy flow data sold to utilities, traders, and policymakers

The Team

SunGrid is built by energy industry veterans — former utility executives, ISO/RTO engineers, IoT product managers, and energy regulatory lawyers. Not crypto speculators. The company is funded by strategic energy industry investors (utilities, energy traders, renewable developers), not venture capital.

The Ask

SunGrid seeks $8M in seed funding to:

  • Finalize SGM-1 hardware design and begin mass production
  • Deploy smart contracts on Ethereum L2 (Arbitrum)
  • Launch pilot with 3 municipal utilities
  • Obtain regulatory no-action letters in the US and EU
